Merseyside Police are investigating an alleged "racial hate crime" following the publication of a column in which Ross Barkley is compared to a gorilla.

Barkley's solicitor confirmed his client "was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a stranger who approached him on Sunday evening," and The Sun's Kelvin MacKenzie subsequently compared the English midfielder, whose grandfather is Nigerian, to a "gorilla in a zoo."
